Frequently asked questions
Will I fall asleep ?
You will not go to sleep.
Hypnotherapists often say the word 'sleep' when having hypnosis as it
can be effective in helping you relax. You will be physically relaxed
but mentally alert. I actually do not use the word 'sleep' during
hypnosis. Will a time arrive when I am under control?
Not at all. This is a myth. Changes are made but just the ones
you need. In reality, you will actually have increased control,
because you cannot be hypnotised against your will.
So how will I know I'm being hypnotised?
Being in a hypnotic
state may not be what you imagine because we all go in and out of
trance like states in our everyday lives. Have you ever been
watching a film and be so engrossed you haven't noticed what's going on
around you? or do you remember being at school, concentrating on a
lesson then looking out of the window and then completing missing what
the teacher said? That is an hypnotic state.Who cannot have
hypnotherapy?
Anyone with epilepsy or a serious mental problem like psychosis.
How long does it take to work?
For things like exam nerves, or
breaking a habit such as smoking it has an immediate effect. For other
problems like depression or confidence it can take a few days or
slightly more to feel some benefit.
Will I remember anything
afterwards?
You may remember all of it or just some of it. It often
seems shorter than is actually was.
Can children have hypnotherapy?
Yes. It can work well for such
things as exam nerves, problems associated with school. confidence,
sport related performance, trouble with sleeping or nightmares.
